The famous and not-so-famous film locations in London

LULU LE VAY, MARCH 2017

This great Capital has provided film locations for a range of movies, both blockbuster and lesser known. We celebrate London’s most inspiring filmic spots, from the picturesque South Bank to the more edgier corners of Brixton and Hackney.

De Beauvoir Estate, HackneyThis East London estate features heavily in the fourth series of hit TV series Luther, which stars Hackney-born hunk Idris Elba. Due to the estate boasting high and low rise buildings, car parks and street access, this site has been a popular choice for filming, having also been used in Silent Witness, 28 Weeks Later, as well as a plethora of music videos and commercials.

CamdenAs one of the oldest boroughs in London, it’s no surprise Camden has been a hot favourite for film locations. The bustling Camden high street has featured in movie classics The Man Who Knew Too Much, Hatton Gardens in Eyes Wide Shut and Camden Market in Happy-Go-Lucky. Just down the road Hampstead Heath has provided the backdrop for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Saint Pancras Station the ideal setting for Batman.

GreenwichThis leafy borough in South East London has been a perfect spot for numerous big flicks. The carriage chase in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took place outside the Royal Naval College, and Greenwich College was transformed into Lilliputian capital in Gulliver’s Travels. Also filmed here was The King’s Speech, The Queen, and Children of Men just down the road in Woolwich.

BrixtonBrockwell Park has been used as a prime location for numerous filming activities, but the most famous flick has to be Guy Ritchie’s The Man from UNCLE. The park was used as a base camp filming unit, with the key scenes shot on Padfield Road, which was transformed into 1960s Berlin. Aliens have also invaded parts of Brixton council estates in British sci-fi horror movie Attack the Block.

South BankHow could we not include one of London’s most popular film locations? Aside from the obvious blockbuster Four Weddings and a Funeral, the South Bank has also provided the perfect back drop for Fast & Furious 6, Thunderbirds, Thor: The Dark World, The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Run, Love Actually and Fat Boy, Run.
