7 cheap thrills in Amsterdam

By Lauren Harmes

In a city so full of culture, excitement and endless activities, you could run out of money pretty quick in Amsterdam. But fear not! We have compiled a list of things to do in Amsterdam when the pennies run a little dry.

Go cycling

For just under €10 you can hire a bike and take in the city on its residents’ favorite form of transport. Take in the amazing architecture, beautiful canals and even cycle through its wondrous parks.

Where: Across the city

Vondelpark

Amsterdam’s main central part Vondelpark is a great beautiful mix of open lawns, lakes, ponds and wildlife – and it’s free! Buy some supplies and have a picnic, or attend one of the many free concerts held there.

Walking tours

Don’t fancy hopping on a bike? You can take a guided tour to see the best of Amsterdam and learn lots along the way – and best of all it’s free! Departing at 11:15am and 1:15pm from the National Monument at Dam Square, you will learn lots about the history of the city.

Flower market

Enjoy the breath-taking aromas and visual pleasures at the Amsterdam Flower Market – the only floating flower market in the world. A perfect date setting, or just somewhere to take a leisurely morning stroll. Either way, it’s a free day out and some flowers will only set you back a few euros.

Visit Amsterdam’s narrowest house

Located just around the corner from the Red Light District, this home is only 2 meters wide and 5 meters deep. Take a little trip to the house and marvel at its size. Nowadays it is a coffee, tea and ceramics boutique and also a teeny tiny tearoom!

Tickle the ivories

Consider yourself a bit of a dab hand on the piano? Show off your musical skills on one of the public pianos in Centraal Station or on the ground floor of the OBA library. Even if you’re not musically-inclined yourself, you might just catch someone else performing and enjoy a free concert!

Enjoy a free film

Amsterdam hosts a free film festival called Pluk de Nacht every August, and admission is completely free! There are free screenings, and you can bring your own snacks or purchase some from the many delicious food trucks.
