Sometimes nice food, a good bottle of wine and pleasant customer service just doesn’t cut it.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the most unique, weird, quirky and unusual restaurant experiences in the wonderful city of Amsterdam.

1. REM Eiland

What happens when you mix 22-meter high dining, a sea rig and a former pirate radio station? No this isn’t the start of a weird joke – it’s restaurant REM Eiland.

Sat in the harbor of Amsterdam and named after the ruling that shut the pirate station down back in the sixties, REM is a super cosy restaurant, with a stunning roof terrace in the summer. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else!

2. Restaurant De Kas

This fine-dining restaurant takes “homemade” to a whole new level. Boasting an on-site greenhouse which it bases its menu around, the whole experience feels like you’re in a large, open greenhouse with huge plate-glass windows which are a nod to the venue’s agricultural past.

3. Ctaste

Why use all five senses when you can really hone in on the most important three – smell, taste and touch? Ctaste is a dine-in-the-dark experience where you can enjoy dishes in complete darkness. The coolest part? All of the dishes are a surprise, so you’ll have to guess what you’re eating for each course!

4. Dinner Train

Want to see all that Holland has to offer but worried you’ll work up a bit of an appetite? This is where Dinner Train comes in! Hop on board and enjoy high-end food while travelling through the beautiful Dutch countryside. Departing from Centraal Station and serving traditional Dutch cuisine, this is the perfect way for a tourist to spend an afternoon.

5. Moeders

They say mother knows best – and they’re not wrong. This cosy Amsterdam restaurant serves up yummy comfort food – just like mama makes – and encourages diners to bring a photo of their mum to add to the wall. Not only are the walls now adorned with the faces of inspirational women, but the decoration is reminiscent of a traditional family home. Feeling homesick? This is the place for you.

6. Restaurant C

We had Ctaste where you were plunged into darkness, now how about Restaurant C where you’re plunged into different temperatures?

Restaurant C has shunted the traditional menu divisions of starter, main and dessert and opted for a temperature-led version based on how hot or cold the food was prepared at. There are five categories ranging from -20 degrees to 200 degrees Celsius – something for everyone!
